The Indian Psyllium husk is a one-year old herb which is cultivated principally in India and the Mediterranean region. The plant which grows straight vertically, forms an ear as flower head on the flower bearing twigs. The ripe seeds are harvested and processed to different qualities. The husk contains valuable mucilage which swells on coming in contact with water. For yellow Indian husks in particular, the shell in which the fibre lies can be separated easily from the seed. This is how one discovered an absolutely new product - the Psyllium husk fibre. These have five times the swelling capacity as compared to the entire seed. Taken with food, the husk fills the stomach and ensures a feeling of saturation. The mucus traps the fat consumed with the food and slows down the sugar intake of the body.
