Description: We found ed. of this map dated 1652. The map also appeared in Sanson's atlas of Asia first published in 1657, one of the earliest atlases to focus on the continent. This is possibly a slighter later ed. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'A. Peyrounin' after 'Nicholas Sanson d'Abbeville'. The name of the engraver which appeared below cartouche at right, was removed on this ed. of this map. Carthographer: Nicholas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600 - 1667) and his descendents were important French cartographer's active through the 17th century. Sanson started his career as a historian where, it is said, he turned to cartography as a way to illustrate his historical studies. In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work
